Shopping for Automobile Insurance

Shopping is supposedly the favorite hobby of many women, but men take heart, you can learn a lot from them when it comes to the art of shopping for automobile insurance. The thing is, most ladies wouldn’t dream of buying the first dress they came across for a special party, they wouldn’t dream of buying the first pair of shoes they tried on in the store, hell, there are loads more there to try on so look at them all. Drivers wouldn’t dream of buying the first car that they came across either, every car has it’s own character, so most people like to test drive a few of them before making their final decision on which to purchase. Ah, what’s all this got to do with automobile insurance? Well, it’s exactly the same, you wouldn’t buy the first car you see, so why on earth would you accept the first quote for car insurance – how do you know it’s the best deal available.

Shopping for Automobile Insurance

  • Find a reliable company – you wouldn’t buy a car from a dodgy motor dealer (at least I hope you wouldn’t – have you ever read the Roald Dahl book “Matilda”, or seen the film?) – so don’t trust your motor insurance to an unlicensed company. Of course, different states have different rules and regulations, but generally if you take out a car insurance policy with an unlicensed company, then you have no protection if the company ends up in the bankruptcy courts. You need to be sure that the car insurance company you choose is sufficiently financially stable to pay up on any claims you might have.
  • Find a reliable agent – some insurance companies conduct a lot of their business through insurance agents, but you must make sure that the agent you choose is reliable. It’s always a good idea to talk to friends, family and colleagues for this sort of thing, you’ll soon find out which agents they have used and whether they would recommend them to anyone else.  You need to make sure that the agent you choose is licensed and can answer all of your questions truthfully and helpfully.
  • Shop around – we’ve already touched on this at the top of the page. Car insurance is expensive, but some companies will definitely be more expensive than others. First of all decide on the type of coverage you will need, the amount you will need and then obtain a few different quotes and estimates from different companies. You might be surprised at the difference prices on offer. Don’t allow yourself to be bullied by high pressure sales people or tactics, don’t be swayed by some swanky television advertising campaign with your favorite actor, stay focused.
  • Ask about Discounts - some car insurance companies won’t offer the information about all of the discounts they have available, the more you pay for your insurance the better it is for them, but it doesn’t mean that they don’t have them available if you ask.
  • Understand What You’re Buying – don’t let them baffle you with bull and lots of diagrams and calculations which mean absolutely nothing to you. Ask them to explain in simple terms the benefits you will have, and if you don’t understand what they’re on about, ask again!  If it all sounds a little too good to be true then perhaps it is.
  • Be Accurate – in filling out your application form. If any of the details are incorrect, whether by accident or deliberately, it can make the whole thing void. If you conveniently miss out any bits of information or don’t tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth, at best the contract may be void, at worst you’ll find yourself in trouble with the law for misrepresentation or even fraud.
